A monster in Greek mythology. A dragon born to the earth goddess Gaia, it guarded the oracle at Delphi, which originally belonged to Gaia. However, at the command of Hera, it persecuted the goddess Leto, and was defeated by Leto's son Apollo. Apollo gave his enemy a proper burial and founded the Pythian Games to commemorate his death.
