Mount Jonendake

Japanese:
Mount Jonendake

A mountain that stands tall on the west side of the Matsumoto Basin in western Nagano Prefecture. It is 2,857 meters above sea level. Along with Mt. Tsubakuro and Mt. Daitenjo, it is a mountain that stands out as a front mountain of the Northern Alps. It is made of granite and has a pyramidal shape, making it the most prominent mountain from the Matsumoto Basin. In 1919 (Taisho 8), Jonen hut was built near the summit, and it was the main route to Mt. Yari until 1924, when the so-called Kisaku New Trail was built from Mt. Daitenjo to Mt. Nishi and Mt. Yari. Take a bus from Toyonen Station on the JR Oito Line to Susado at the foot of the mountain, and then it takes about 7 hours. In recent years, people have taken the forest road Ichinosawa Line via Prefectural Roads 310 and 309 from the Nagano Expressway Toyoshina Interchange. The most common route is to reach Jonen hut in 5 hours from the Ichinosawa trailhead. It takes 40 minutes to reach the summit from Jonen Hut. From the peak, there is a wonderful view of the Northern Alps, Utsukushigahara, the Yatsugatake mountain range, and the Matsumoto Basin. The mountain is said to have been named after the ascetic who founded it, or Jonenbo, the head priest of the temple at the foot of the mountain. In early May, when the snow melts near the peak, it is said that the black form of Bodhidharma appears as he sleeps, lying with his head to the north.
