…The Chinese translation of the Sanskrit word indriya (originally meaning power). In Indian philosophy, the five senses or organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and body) are generally referred to as the five roots, but the Upanishads already list the five roots as one of the vital functions residing in the body.
