Tatsuta Road - Just a Road

Japanese:
Tatsuta Road - Just a Road
This road crosses the mountain (Tatsutayama) behind Tatsuta Taisha Shrine in Tatsuno, Misato Town, Nara Prefecture, and is one of the ancient roads connecting Yamato and Kawachi. It appears to have been in use already during the reign of Emperor Tenmu, as an account of the Jinshin War shows Otomo Fukiage dispatching troops to Tatsuta, and in November 679 (the 8th year of Emperor Tenmu), checkpoints were set up at Osakayama and Tatsutayama. Tatsutayama also appears in the legend of Emperor Jimmu's Eastern Expedition and in the Chronicle before the Accession of Emperor Richu to the Throne in the Nihon Shoki, but these articles are likely embellished with the Tatsuta Road in mind. In the Nara period, it seems to have been frequently used as an official road connecting Heijo-kyo and Naniwa, and many poems about Tatsutayama (Tatsutayama) appear in the Manyoshu.
