Snowdrop - Su-no-do-roppu (English spelling) snowdrop

A cold-resistant autumn-planted bulbous plant of the Amaryllidaceae family (APG classification: Amaryllidaceae). It is known as snowdrop from its genus name, Galanthus. Native to Europe and the Caucasus. The bulbs are small bulbs, and they flower the earliest of all autumn-planted bulbous plants. In sunny locations, they will produce 2-3 linear leaves about 10 cm long in February, and a flower stalk longer than the leaves will grow from the center, with white downward-facing flowers at the top. They are suitable for planting outdoors, in pots, and in rock gardens.

The representative species , G. nivalis L., is native to the mountains of southern Europe. It grows to about 10cm tall and flowers from winter to early spring. There are many improved varieties. G. elwesii Hook.f. is larger than G. nivalis, easier to cultivate, and flowers earlier.

Plant in October in well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Grow in a sunny location until flowering, then transplant to a semi-shaded location. Potted plants are five bulbs per No. 4 pot, and moved to the shade after flowering. Propagation is by bulb division, but seeds can also be grown.

ヒガンバナ科（APG分類：ヒガンバナ科）の耐寒性秋植え球根草。属名のガランサスよりスノードロップの名で知られている。ヨーロッパおよびカフカス地方原産。球根は小形の鱗茎(りんけい)で、秋植え球根草のなかではもっとも早く開花する。日当りのよい所なら、2月に長さ10センチメートルくらいの線形の葉を2～3枚出し、葉より長い花茎が中心から伸び、頂端に白色で下向きの花をつける。露地植え、鉢植え、ロック・ガーデンなどに適する。

　代表種のニバリス種G. nivalis L.は南ヨーロッパの山地の原産。草丈は10センチメートルほどで、冬から早春に花を開く。改良品種が多数ある。エルウェシー種G. elwesii Hook.f.はニバリスより大形で栽培しやすく、開花が早い。

　10月、有機質に富む水もちのよい土壌に植える。開花までは日当りのよい所で育成し、その後は半日陰の所に移植して育てる。鉢植えは4号鉢に5球植えとし、花が終わったら日陰に置く。繁殖は分球によるが、実生(みしょう)も可能である。
