A Nanga painter from the late Edo period. Born in Mito, he served three feudal lords. His given name was Nin, his pen name was Shien, and he was originally called Jintaro, later Nintaro, and also went by the name Koan no Kori. His father, Tachihara Suiken, was the foremost scholar in the Mito domain, and also had a deep knowledge of painting. Kyosho initially studied under Hayashi Juei, and was influenced by the Maruyama-Shijo school, and after moving to Edo, he also studied under Tani Buncho. He was also close to Watanabe Kazan, and when Kazan was arrested in the Bansha no Goku incident (1839), he worked hard with Tsubaki Chinzan to rescue him. Kyosho's style is characterized by clean, refined, and elegant expressions. His representative works include "Grapes" (Tokyo National Museum) and "Reeds and Geese" (private collection).

江戸後期の南画家。水戸の出身で3代の藩主に仕えた。名は任,字は子遠,はじめ甚太郎,のち任太郎と称し,香案小吏とも号した。父の立原翠軒は水戸藩随一の学者で,絵画にも造詣が深かった。杏所は当初林十江に学び,円山四条派の影響も受け,江戸に移ってからは谷文晁にもついた。渡辺崋山とも親しく,崋山が蛮社の獄(1839)で逮捕されたときは,椿椿山と救援に奔走した。すっきりと垢抜けした気品に富んだ表現が,杏所の作風の特色になっている。代表作に「葡萄図」(東京国立博物館蔵),「芦雁図」(個人蔵)などがある。
