…His brother, Benjamin White (1725-94), was involved in publishing natural history books, and through this relationship, Gilbert and one of the authors, Pennant, became friends, and the first edition of Selborne Natural History was also published by his brother. The practice of clergymen and naturalists researching the history and natural history of their local areas and compiling them into books was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, pioneered by Robert Plot's (1640-96) Natural History of Staffordshire (1686). However, the reason that White's work is the only one that has remained as a classic is that he scientifically observed the ecology of living things, including bird migration and reproductive behavior, with his own eyes, and avoided confusing it with folk information obtained from myths and legends. …
