Yamato Mountains

Japanese: やまと山脈 - やまとさんみゃく

A mountain range located about 300 km south-southwest of Showa Station, Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. It consists of seven relatively large mountain massifs and numerous nunataks (isolated peaks), with the peaks at about 2,200-2,400 m above sea level rising north to south for over 50 km on the continental ice at an altitude of 1,600-2,000 m. It is made up of granite, diorite, and gneiss. A Japanese expedition discovered and investigated the mountain in 1960, and in 1969, nine meteorites were found in the bare ice (blue ice) area nearby. They subsequently collected 12 meteorites in 1973, 663 in 1974, and 307 in 1975, and named them the "Yamato meteorites," which became world famous. About 3,000 meteorites were collected in the 1979-80 season.

南極大陸クイーンモードランド，昭和基地の南南西約 300kmの地点にある山脈。7つのやや大きな山塊と，多数のヌナタク (孤立峰) から成り，標高約 2200～2400mの山頂が，標高 1600～2000mの大陸氷の上に 50km以上にわたって南北にそびえる。花崗岩，閃緑岩，片麻岩から成る。日本の探検隊が 1960年に発見，調査し，69年，付近の裸氷 (青氷) 地帯から9個の隕石が発見され，続いて 73年に 12個，74年に 663個，75年に 307個を採集，「やまと隕石」と命名されて世界的に有名になった。 79～80年シーズンには約 3000個を採集。
