In Arab and Islamic societies, the title of respect given to an elderly person, tribal or family elder, or person who holds religious or public authority. For example, the highest religious authority is called Sheikh al-Islam, a village chief is called Sheikh al-Balad, and school teachers and scholars are also called Sheikhs.
