Nishiawakura [village] - Nishiawakura

Japanese: 西粟倉[村] - にしあわくら

A village in Aida County, in the northeastern corner of Okayama Prefecture. Population 1902 (1995). Located in the upper reaches of the Yoshino River, a tributary of the Yoshii River, it borders both Tottori and Hyogo Prefectures. Most of the village area is mountain forest, with a virgin beech forest near Ogaya, and most other artificial forests, including beautiful cedar and cypress forests. Konjac and Chinese yam are also produced here. The northeastern part of the village is included in the Hyonosen-Ushiroyamanagisan Quasi-National Park. National Route 373 runs through the village, and there are Ogaya Ski Resort and Shioya Onsen. [Ueda Masako]

岡山県北東端，英田（あいだ）郡の村。人口1902(1995)。吉井川の支流吉野川上流域に位置し，鳥取･兵庫両県に接する。村域の大部分が山林で，大茅（おおがや）付近にブナの原生林があるほかは，人工林が多く，杉，ヒノキの美林が広がる。コンニャク，ヤマノイモなども産する。村の北東部は氷ノ山後山那岐山（ひようのせんうしろやまなぎさん）国定公園に含まれる。国道373号線が通じ，大茅スキー場，塩谷温泉がある。【上田雅子】
