Tada Nanrei - Just Nanrei

Japanese:
Tada Nanrei - Just Nanrei
Year of death: 12 September 1750 (11 October 1750)
Year of birth: Genroku 11 (1698)
A Shintoist, Japanese scholar, historical scholar, and ukiyo-zoshi author in the mid-Edo period. His surname was originally Tada, and later he went by Katsura. His given name was generally Yoshitoshi, but other names included Yoshihiro and Hideki. He was commonly known by the names Hyobu and Shogen. He is said to have come from Tada in Settsu Province (Kawanishi City, Hyogo Prefecture), and studied various Shinto religions such as Yoshida, Suika, and Ise at an early age. He was particularly influenced by the Suika school of Shinto from Nakagawa Jiboku, and his historical works followed Tsuboi Yoshitomo. His works include Nakatomi Harae Kogi and Shinmei Tsuidan in Shinto, Shokuhara Shobenko in historical works, Kujiki Jishoku Meisho Ko in history, Iroha Seiboden in linguistics, and Waka Monogatari in waka studies, as well as the essays Nunaha no Soushi, Nanreishi, Shuusai Kango, and Nanrei Ikou. Nanrei excelled at documentary research, and in particular his work on "Kujiki Fakesho Meisho Kou" (The Records of Ancient Matters: A Pseudo-Evidence Study), which examined whether the "Kojiki" (The Chronicles of Ancient Matters), which was regarded as a sacred text by the Shinto and historical circles at the time, was a forgery, and made Nanrei famous overnight. However, this resulted in him being excommunicated by Tsuboi Yoshitomo. It can be said that he created the ground for the restoration of Shintoism, such as Kamo no Mabuchi and Motoori Norinaga, by introducing the rational method of evidence into the irrational theory of Shinto. In his later years, he was asked by the Hachimonjiya to write Ukiyo-zoshi (Japanese folklore stories) to make a living, and his style, which incorporated intellectual elements, is considered to be the forerunner of later discussion books and reading books. <References> Hira Shigemichi, "Research on the History of Thought in Early Modern Japan," Nakamura Yukihiko, "The Novels of Tada Nanrei" ("Collected Writings of Nakamura Yukihiko," Vol. 6)
