Torch ginger

Japanese: トーチ･ジンジャー（英語表記）torch ginger

A large perennial plant of the Zingiberaceae family. The rhizome is creeping, and many stems emerge underground. The pseudostem is 3-5 m tall and covered with leaf sheaths, with two rows of entire leaves. The leaves are lanceolate, 30-60 cm long, glossy, dark green on the upper side and reddish brown on the underside. When the plant reaches maturity, a 1-1.5 m flower stalk grows from the base of the plant, and at the end of the stalk grows a fleshy, glossy, shortened, spherical spike-like inflorescence. The bracts are pink-red, and the petals are lanceolate and longer than the calyx, and are red. The margins are yellow. The inflorescence looks like a torch, hence the name torch ginger.
