Japanese: 多田等観 - ただとうかん
Tada Tokan

A Buddhist scholar who entered Tibet. Born in a Jodo Shinshu Honganji temple in Akita City. He went to India on the orders of the head priest Otani Kozui, and met with the 13th Dalai Lama at Kalimpong, where he was given the Buddhist name Thuptengyeltsen. In September 1913 (Taisho 2), he arrived in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, via Bhutan, and spent the next 10 years as a monk at Sera Gakkai Monastery. He returned to Japan in 1923. He brought back over 24,000 copies of valuable Tibetan Buddhist research documents, including the Derge edition of the Tibetan Tripitaka. He served as a lecturer at the University of Tokyo, Tohoku University, Keio University, and the University of California. In 1960 (Showa 35), he published Catalog of Tibetan Buddhist Scriptures, and was awarded the Japan Academy Prize. As a researcher at the Toyo Bunko, he devoted himself to nurturing the next generation of Tibetan scholars and made a great contribution to the development of Tibetan studies in Japan. He passed away on February 18, 1967.
