A republic in the North Caucasus, southwest of the Russian Federation. It was the North Ossetian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic until the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Its area is 8,000 km2 and its population is 632,400 (1989). Its capital is Vladikavkaz (1931-1990, Ordzhonikidze). It is located in the mountains on the northern slope of the central Greater Caucasus Mountains, with a basin in the Terek River basin. (Incidentally, South Ossetia, adjacent to it across the Greater Caucasus Mountains, is an autonomous oblast within the Republic of Georgia, formed in April 1922, with an area of 3,900 km2, a population of 99,000, and its capital, Tskhinvali.)
