Pretorius and his men in the Battle of the Bloody River, and in 1840 was deposed by his brother Mpande (c. 1800-1873). Mpande established friendly relations with the Boers, and a period of relative peace continued until his nephew Cetewayo (c. 1825-1884) ascended to the throne in 1873.
