Cetewayo

...Dingane repelled the Boers, who had advanced into Natal under the leadership of Retief, at Matiwane Hill in 1837, but was defeated the following year by A. Pretorius and his men in the Battle of the Bloody River, and in 1840 was deposed by his brother Mpande (c. 1800-1873). Mpande established friendly relations with the Boers, and a period of relative peace continued until his nephew Cetewayo (c. 1825-1884) ascended to the throne in 1873. In January 1879, British troops invaded the kingdom, but Cetewayo defeated them at the Battle of Isandlwana. ...
