Lake Tazawa

Japanese:
Lake Tazawa
A lake in the Ou Mountains in eastern Akita Prefecture. It is located almost in the center of Senboku City. It is a caldera lake formed by the collapse of a volcano in the Nasu volcanic belt. It has an area of 25.8 km2 , a circumference of 20 km, and an elevation of 249 m above sea level. Its maximum depth of 423 m makes it the deepest in Japan. Its water transparency was one of the best in Japan at 33 m in the 1930s, but it has declined significantly due to pollution. It is a typical acidotrophic lake, with few fish and a nearly circular shape typical of a caldera. It is said that the large amount of water it holds, despite having almost no inflowing rivers, is due to the large amount of spring water at the bottom of the lake. The outlet, the Katajiri River, in the west, was closed in 1940 to operate the Honai Power Station. At that time, highly acidic water from the Tama River was flowed into Lake Tazawa for power generation, causing the death of endemic fish species such as the Kunimasu. The surrounding area is a major power source for Akita Prefecture. The lakeside is home to scenic spots such as Shirahama, Gozanoishi, and Tagonoki, and together with the Dakigaeri Valley in the southeast of Senboku City, it belongs to the Lake Tazawa Dakigaeri Prefectural Natural Park.

Lake Tazawa

The former town area occupies almost the eastern half of Semboku City in eastern Akita Prefecture. It is located on the east side of Lake Tazawa and borders Iwate Prefecture to the east. In 1956, Honai Town, Jindai Village, and Tazawa Village were merged to form Tazawako Town. In 2005, it was merged with Kakunodate Town and Nishiki Village to form Semboku City. The central settlement, Ihonai, had a guard post in the Edo period and prospered as a key transportation point connecting the Akita Domain and the Morioka Domain. It is an important power source area in the prefecture, blessed with forest resources, and has many woodworking factories such as large beech lumber mills. It belongs to Towada-Hachimantai National Park and Tazawako Dakigaeri Prefectural Natural Park, and has many tourist attractions such as Lake Tazawa, Lake Hosen created by Tamagawa Dam, Mt. Komagatake (1,637m), Tazawako Plateau, Nyuto Onsenkyo, and Tamagawa Onsen. The Beitou stone at Tamagawa Onsen has been designated a Special Natural Monument by the nation, and the alpine plant zone of Mt. Komagatake has been designated a national natural monument.
