In response, JC Adams of England and UJJ Le Verrier of France independently began research and calculated the position of an unknown planet on the assumption that it existed outside Uranus and was disturbing the motion of Uranus. In England, J. Challis (1803-82) of the Cambridge Observatory conducted the search, but the lack of a detailed star chart made it difficult to observe.
