…In 1843, the Royal Society of Sciences of Göttingen announced a prize for this problem. In response, JC Adams of England and UJJ Le Verrier of France independently began research and calculated the position of an unknown planet on the assumption that it existed outside Uranus and was disturbing the motion of Uranus. In England, J. Challis (1803-82) of the Cambridge Observatory conducted the search, but the lack of a detailed star chart made it difficult to observe. Meanwhile, when Galle of the Berlin Observatory received Le Verrier's letter on September 23, 1846, he conducted a search based on the newly created star chart, and within 30 minutes discovered an 8th magnitude star that was not on the chart, 52' off from the predicted position. …
