Perhaps because of its fast growth, flexible branches, and white bark, the birch (Betula arvensis) was considered a tree of life, growth, and blessings by the ancient Germanic peoples. This is also reflected in the fact that it was a sacred tree to the goddess Frigg, and green branches were attached to gates and windows and were displayed at entrances as a sign of love and joy.
