Year of death: 1256.10.14 (9.25.1256) Year of birth: En'o 1.11.21 (1239.12.17) The fifth Shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate. Son of Fujiwara no Yoritsune and Fujiwara no Chikayoshi's daughter, Omiyada. In 1244 (Kangen 2), at the age of just six, he was forced by the regent Hojo Tsunetoki to take over the position of Shogun from his father Yoritsune. He remained in Kamakura as Shogun even after Yoritsune was banished to Kyoto in 1251 (Kencho 3), but Yoritsune was suspected of being involved in a rebellion by Ryogyo Hoshi and others, and this was used as an excuse to banish Yoritsune to Kyoto the following year (Kencho 4). Even at a young age, Yoritsune was caught up in the struggle for leadership within the Shogunate. <References> Ueyokote Masataka, "Kamakura Period Political History Research" (Shinichiro Takahashi) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
