Raigouzu - Raigouzu

Japanese: 来迎図 - らいごうず
Raigouzu - Raigouzu
Raigo is one of Amida's 48 vows described in the Sutra of Contemplation of Immeasurable Life, and refers to the arrival of Amida Buddha to all living beings who believe in Pure Land Buddhism at the time of death. There are many depictions of Amida Buddha flying down accompanied by his holy hordes, such as the "Amida and the Holy hordes Raigo" at Mount Koya, but there are also other depictions such as the "Return Raigo" and "Amida Crossing the Mountains," which depict Amida Buddha returning after welcoming them. In addition to paintings, there are also sculptures of Raigo images. Many were made during the mid-Heian and Kamakura periods, when Pure Land Buddhism became popular.
