China's largest desert, covering the center of the Tarim Basin in the southern part of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. In Chinese characters, it is called Taklamagan. In Uyghur, it means "Once you enter, you cannot get out." Surrounded by the Tianshan and Kunlun mountain ranges, it stretches about 1,000 km from east to west and 400 km from north to south, with an area of about 324,000 ^km2 . It has become rapidly dry since around the time of Christ, and once-prosperous cities such as ancient Khotan, Niya, and Loulan have become ruins. This desert was little known until it was explored by Hedin at the end of the 19th century. Oasis agriculture is practiced in parts of the Tarim River coast, the southern foot of the Tianshan, and parts of the foot of the Kunlun Mountains.

中国，新疆ウイグル自治区南部，タリム盆地の中央をおおう中国最大の砂漠。漢字では塔克拉瑪干。ウイグル語で〈一度入ったら出られない〉の意。天山山脈，崑崙(こんろん)山脈に囲まれ，東西約1000km，南北約400km，面積約32万4000km²。紀元前後から急速に乾燥化に向かい，かつて栄えた古ホータン，ニヤ，楼蘭などの都市は廃虚と化している。この砂漠は19世紀末ヘディンによって探検されるまではほとんど知られていなかった。タリム川沿岸の一部および天山山脈南麓，崑崙山脈麓の一部ではオアシス農業が行われる。
