A city in the eastern part of Fukuoka Prefecture, facing the Suo-Nada Sea. It was incorporated as a city in 1955. Its center is Unoshima, where the Nippō Main Line runs. Thermal power plants, metal, plastic and IC-related factories are located mainly on reclaimed land around Ushima Port, and in recent years, the city has been developing industrial parks and attracting businesses. Rice, tea and vegetables are cultivated in the inland lowlands, and fruit is grown in the hills. Seaweed farming and small-scale bottom trawl fishing are also practiced along the coast of the Suo-Nada Sea. Many people commute to Kitakyushu and Nakatsu. The Higashi-Kyushu Expressway runs through the city. The area around Inugatake and Kubotayama is part of the Yaba Hita Hikosan Quasi-National Park, and Inugatake is home to a natural habitat of the Tsukushi Rhododendron (a natural monument).
