A rebel leader in 18th century Vietnam. Born into the Le Dynasty. Angered by the tyranny of the Trinh clan, he staged a coup in Hanoi in 1738, but failed and fled to the Son Tay region, where he led rebellions in various places for the next 32 years. During this time, the Son Khoi River Delta had already been developed down to the lowlands, but frequent floods and droughts caused an increase in the population's flight. Moreover, the Trinh government's centralization policy from the early 18th century onwards led to increased taxes and corvée. This sparked the Mat Rebellion, which led to rebellions by Nguyen Phu Cu in the delta and Hoang Van Chat in the mountains, shaking the foundations of the Trinh government's military and financial systems and hastening its collapse (1786).

18世紀ベトナムの反乱指導者。レ(黎)朝宗室の生れ。チン(鄭)氏の専横を怒って1738年にハノイでクーデタを起こしたが，失敗してソンタイ地方に亡命し，以後32年にわたって各地で反乱を指導した。この時期，ソンコイ川デルタはすでに低湿地にいたるまで開拓が完了したが，洪水と干ばつが頻発し民の流散が増加した。しかも18世紀初頭以降のチン政権の集権化政策は，租税，賦役の増徴をもたらした。このためマトの反乱が口火となって，デルタではグエン･フー･クー(阮有求)，山地ではホアン･バン･チャット(黄文質)らの反乱が起こり，チン政権の軍事財政の根幹を揺さぶり，その倒壊(1786)を早めた。
