The composition of the inhabitants is complicated due to its history as a transit point for the slave trade, and it is made up of six groups. The oldest inhabitants, the descendants of African slaves brought to the island in the early colonial period, are called filhos da terra. The descendants of slaves brought from Angola are called angolares, and are mainly fishermen.
