A scholar of Japanese literature and theater researcher. His pen name was Madarayama. He was born in Nagano Prefecture. He graduated from Nagano Normal School in 1897 (Meiji 30). He studied under Ueda Kazutoshi. After serving as a member of the Ministry of Education's committee for compiling Japanese language textbooks, he became a professor at the Tokyo Music School, where he worked hard to establish a Japanese music department. He later became a lecturer at the University of Tokyo and a professor at Taisho University. He researched the history of Japanese popular music and the history of Japanese theater, and in 1928 (Showa 3) he received the Academy Prize for his work "History of Japanese Popular Music." His main works include "A Study of Song, Dance and Music," "Study of Japanese Theater," "Collection of Japanese Popular Music," "History of Edo Literature," and "History of Japanese Theater." He collected books, calligraphy, and paintings, and his collection became known as the Madarayama Library. He was also famous as a song lyricist.
