It is widely distributed in the cold regions surrounding the Arctic from Lapland to Siberia, Kamchatka, and Alaska, and in Japan, it lives only in the alpine zones of the Hida Mountains and the Yatsugatake Mountains in Honshu. It is abundant in some places on the ridges of the Hida Mountains from Yukikura-dake to Chogatake and Nishihotaka-dake. Its wingspan is 3.5 to 4.5 cm. It occurs on wide ridges and gentle slopes at altitudes of 2,500 m or more, and despite its name "sky lily," it prefers sunlight and stops being active as soon as the sun is hidden by clouds, often hiding between stones or under pumila.
