A bird of the order Psittacidae and family Psittacidae. It lives in large flocks in the deserts of the inland of Australia. It has long been known as a pet bird, and breeds well in cages using budgerigar nest boxes. It is about 18 cm long. The original species is green, but there are varieties with yellow, olive, white, lilac, cobalt, and blue feathers, as well as yellow with green spots and large genetic varieties. The underside is unmarked, but the back is striped with black. Males have blue noses, while females have yellow, which helps them to distinguish between the sexes. In their native desert habitat, they gather in flocks near water, but they can tolerate thirst well, and experiments have shown that they are more resistant to water deficiency than other birds. They fly around, chattering noisily with each other, but because they are gentle in nature and prefer to live in groups, it is possible to raise many of them in a large cage. Tame ones can become accustomed to landing on people's hands or shoulders, and can sometimes imitate human speech, but generally they are not very skilled at this. British ornithologist J. Gould first imported a pair of them to his home country as pets in 1840, and succeeded in breeding them in Germany in 1855. A yellow variety was developed around 1872, probably in Belgium, and successfully bred in 1884. A blue variety was created in Japan, probably around 1940 (Showa 15). Large varieties, with particularly large heads and upper bodies, were developed in Britain and imported to Japan around 1967 (Showa 42).

When raising them, they are constantly fed a mixture of barnyard millet, foxtail millet, and millet, as well as green vegetables, ground mullet, and water. They lay about four eggs per clutch, and the chicks hatch in about 20 days. After another month, the chicks leave the nest. They are able to breed 6 to 9 months after leaving the nest.

鳥綱オウム目オウム科の鳥。オーストラリア内陸の砂漠地に大群ですむ。古くから飼い鳥として世界に知られ、籠(かご)内でセキセイインコ用の巣箱によってよく繁殖する。全長約18センチメートル。原種は緑色であるが、黄、オリーブ、白、ライラック、コバルト、青などの羽色をした品種があり、黄色に緑斑(はん)などのぶちや、遺伝的な大形品種などができている。腹面は無斑であるが、背面は黒の横縞(よこじま)をしている。雄は鼻部が青色であるのに対し、雌は黄色なので区別され、それは雌雄間の認知にも役だっている。原産地の砂漠地では水のある所に群れ集まるが、渇きにはよく耐え、実験的にもほかの鳥より水の欠乏に強い生理が立証されている。互いににぎやかに鳴き交わし飛び回るが、性質が温和で集団生活を好むため、広い追い込み籠に多数の個体を飼育することもできる。子飼いのものは、人の手や肩に止まるほどになれ、ときに人語をまねるものもあるが、一般には巧みではない。イギリスの鳥類学者J・グールドが、1840年に初めて飼い鳥として一つがいを母国に輸入し、1855年にドイツで繁殖に成功したとされる。また、黄色の品種は1872年ごろ、おそらくベルギーで作出され、1884年に繁殖に成功した。さらに1940年（昭和15）ごろになってと思われるが、日本でブルーという品種がつくられた。大形品種はとくに頭部と上半身が大きく、イギリスで作出され、日本には1967年（昭和42）ごろから輸入されたという。

　飼育の際、餌(えさ)はヒエ、アワ、キビを混ぜ合わせた撒き餌(まきえ)のほか、青菜、ボレイ粉、水を常時与える。産卵は1腹4卵前後で、20日ほどで雛(ひな)がかえる。さらに約1か月たつと雛は巣立ちする。巣立ち後6～9か月で繁殖可能となる。
