A general term for the living Sepioidea and Teuthoidea (collectively Decembrachiata) orders of the phylum Mollusca and class Cephalopoda. In English, short-bodied cuttlefish, such as cuttlefish, are called cuttlefish, while long, slender ones, such as spear squids and Pacific flying squids, are called squids. It is estimated that there are approximately 400-500 species in the oceans of the world, and 90-100 species in the Northwest Pacific Ocean, including Japan. The largest are the giant squids, which can reach a mantle length of 6m, and the smallest are the pygmy squids, which have a mantle length of about 1.6cm.
