Kainz - Joseph Kainz

German actor. Born in Hungary. He trained at the Meiningen Duke's Theater and made his debut in Vienna in 1874. In 1880 he moved to the Munich Court Theater and became friends with King Ludwig II of Bavaria. In 1883 he appeared at the newly established Deutsches Theater in Berlin, where he performed alongside the famous actress Agnes Sollma at the height of his power, and in 1899 he was welcomed to the Burgtheater in Vienna. During this time he attempted a tour of America, and in 1892 he played Hamlet, which was a huge hit. He played a wide range of roles, particularly the protagonists of Shakespeare, Schiller, and Grillparzer, and with his exquisite dialogue and psychological portrayal he created an era in the German theater before the advent of naturalism.

ドイツの俳優。ハンガリーに生まれる。マイニンゲン公劇団で修業し、1874年ウィーンでデビュー、80年にはミュンヘン宮廷劇場に移り、バイエルン国王ルードウィヒ2世と親交を結んだ。83年新設のベルリンのドイツ座に出演、名女優アグネス・ゾルマと競演して全盛期を築き、99年にはウィーンのブルク劇場に迎えられた。この間アメリカ巡演を試み、92年にはハムレットを演じて大当りをとっている。役柄は広く、とくにシェークスピア、シラー、グリルパルツァーの主人公を得意とし、絶妙な台詞(せりふ)回しと心理描写によって、自然主義出現前のドイツ劇壇に一時代を築いた。
