Shinobu Ishihara

Ophthalmologist. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from the Medical School of Tokyo Imperial University in 1905 (Meiji 38), he applied to become an army surgeon and was appointed as an army surgeon second class in 1906. In 1908, he entered the graduate school of Tokyo Imperial University, where he majored in ophthalmology, and in 1910, he became an instructor at the Army Medical School. In 1912 (Meiji 45), he studied in Germany, where he researched ophthalmology, and returned to Japan in 1914 (Taisho 3). He obtained his doctorate in 1916. In 1922, while still serving as an army surgeon first class, he became a professor at Tokyo Imperial University, where he headed the Department of Ophthalmology in the Faculty of Medicine, and retired in 1940 (Showa 15). He published many research papers on ophthalmology, but his research on color vision disorders (color blindness) is the most outstanding of these, and his "color vision test chart" is known worldwide and widely used, known as the "Ishihara chart." In 1941, he received the Imperial Academy Prize for his research on color blindness, was elected a member of the Japan Academy in 1957, and was appointed a Person of Cultural Merit in 1961.

眼科学者。東京生まれ。1905年（明治38）東京帝国大学医科大学卒業、陸軍軍医を志願し、翌1906年陸軍二等軍医となる。1908年東京帝国大学大学院に入り、眼科学を専攻、1910年陸軍軍医学校教官となり、1912年（明治45）ドイツに留学、眼科学を研究し、1914年（大正3）に帰国。1916年学位を取得。1922年、陸軍一等軍医正のまま東京帝国大学教授となり、医学部眼科学教室を主宰、1940年（昭和15）退職。眼科学に関する多くの研究論文を発表したが、それらのなかでも色覚異常（色盲）に関する研究はもっとも優れており、「色覚検査表」は世界的に知られ、「石原表」と称されて広く使用されている。1941年には「色盲の研究」により帝国学士院賞を受け、1957年（昭和32）日本学士院会員に選ばれ、1961年文化功労者に推された。
