Fujinoki Tomb - Fujinoki Tomb
<br /> A circular tomb from the late 6th century located west of Horyu-ji Temple in Ikaruga Town, Ikoma County, Nara Prefecture. It is located about 350 meters west of the Western Precinct of Horyu- ji Temple. The circular tomb, which is over 50 meters in diameter and 9 meters high, is called " Misasakiyama " according to records remaining at Horyu- ji Temple, and some say it is the tomb of Emperor Sushun, who was assassinated by Soga no Umako and others. There are theories that it may be the tomb of the Mononobe clan, the Soga clan, or the Heguri clan, but there is no established theory, and it has hardly attracted any attention in the archaeological world until now. However, in a 1985 survey, luxurious gilt bronze horse equipment was unearthed from inside a horizontal-hole stone chamber that had escaped looting, attracting attention. The stone coffin was a hollowed-out house-shaped stone coffin made of white tuff from Mt. Nijo , and was painted vermilion on all sides. Horse equipment, weapons, and armor were found inside the stone chamber, and two bodies were confirmed to have been buried inside the sarcophagus, undisturbed since burial. Over 12,000 luxurious grave goods, including mirrors and swords, were found near the coffin, almost in their original positions, providing valuable data for considering the purpose and function of the grave goods, the nature of which had been unclear until now. It was designated a national historic site in 1991 (Heisei 3). The condition of the excavated items was not good, so a conservation treatment was carried out over 10 years, and detailed investigations were conducted on the gilt bronze horse equipment, the gilt bronze crown, gilt bronze sandals , decorated sword, various jewels, and silver and gilt bronze ornaments that were buried with the grave goods. The advanced techniques and gorgeous design are highly regarded as a collection of the finest craftsmanship from the late Kofun period. The grave goods are all designated as national treasures and are on permanent display at the Nara Prefectural Kashihara Archaeological Institute Museum. Take the Nara Kotsu bus from JR Kansai Main Line Horyuji Station to "Horyujimonzen" and walk for about 5 minutes.
