[Parity in quantum mechanics]
The concept of parity was originally introduced in quantum mechanics by the American Eugene _Paul Wigner _{(1902-95) to demonstrate the transformability of the wave function Ψ(r1, r2, ..., rn ) of a} certain level of an atom with respect to spatial inversion P , PΨ ( r1 , ..., rn ) = Ψ( _-r1 , ..., -rn ) = _± Ψ( r1 , ..., rn ₎ . If the orbital angular momentum of each particle is l1 _, l2 , ... in units _of ħ (Planck's constant _divided by 2π), then parity is: Otto Laporte of Germany discovered the rule that l _i changes by odd numbers when an atom emits electric dipole radiation (Laporte's rule), and this can be used to classify atomic levels by parity. On the other hand, the parity of operators corresponding to physical quantities is defined in the same way as in classical mechanics.
