A perennial plant of the Rubiaceae family (APG classification: Rubiaceae). The stem is 60-80 cm tall. The leaves are thin and 1-4 cm long. There are 6-12 leaves in whorls, but there are only two true leaves and the rest are leaf-like leaves formed by dividing stipules. The flowers are white and bloom in summer. They grow in clusters in sunny areas and are distributed in Japan and Korea. They are named after the fact that they are often found on riverbanks and their leaves resemble pine needles. Varieties with yellow flowers are called Kibanakawamatsuba, and varieties with pale yellow flowers are called Ezonokawamatsuba.
