Afonso V

Afonso V
1432‐81
King of the Abis dynasty of Portugal. Reigned 1438-81. He ascended to the throne at the age of six due to the early death of his father, King Duarte. There was a conflict at court between the feudal nobility, who wanted to invade North Africa, and the faction of Dom Pedro, who wanted to advance along the coast of West Africa with the support of the city merchants. In 1438, Dom Pedro became regent, and the latter side won, and the expansion into West Africa was actively pursued until 1446. However, during the period of direct rule by the king (from 1448 onwards), the feudal nobility regained power.
