Takagi Ichinosuke - Takagi Ichinosuke

A scholar of Japanese literature, he was born in Nagoya and graduated from Tokyo Imperial University. He has served as professor at Keijo Imperial University, Kyushu University, Nihon University, Nagoya University, and other universities. He left a distinguished record of literary research that focused on ancient literature but also looked at Japanese literature in general. His masterpieces include "The Sweetfish of Yoshino" (1941), which discussed the poetic spirit and epic poetry of ancient times and sparked the "Heroic Age Debate," "A Theory of Ancient Literature" (1952), which theorized the technical nature of literature as something that connects the subjective and objective, and "The Environment of Japanese Literature" (1938), which historically examined how the cultural climate as a literary environment is related to literary structure.

国文学者。名古屋に生まれる。東京帝国大学卒業。京城帝国大学、九州大学、日本大学、名古屋大学などの教授を歴任。古代文学を中心に、国文学全般を視野に収めた文芸学的研究に優れた業績を残した。古代における詩精神や叙事詩を論じて、「英雄時代論争」の契機ともなった『吉野の鮎(あゆ)』（1941）、文学における主観と客観をつなぐものとしての技術的性格を論理化した『古文芸の論』（1952）、文学環境としての風土がいかに文芸構造に関与するかを歴史的に論じた『日本文学の環境』（1938）など、名著である。
