An antibiotic. It belongs to the amino sugar antibiotics isolated from the culture medium of the soil-derived actinomycete Streptomyces griseusa red mutant species S. puniceus and S. floridae . It has a strong growth inhibitory effect on tuberculosis bacteria and is used against tuberculosis bacteria resistant to streptomycin.
