Kawasaki Nine Entrance

Noh actor. Kadono school otsuzumi performer. His real name was Rikichi. He was born in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture. He first studied under Azuma Shingo in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, and in 1899 (Meiji 32) moved to Tokyo and studied under Tsumura Mataki. He taught the next generation at Nohgakukai events led by Ikeuchi Nobuyoshi. He was known as a strong-willed man in the world of Nohgaku, and his style of performance was full of energy, and was described as profound and stern, like autumn frost and scorching sun. He also contributed to the establishment of music theory for hayashi. In 1950 (Showa 25), he was placed under the care of the head of the family. He was appointed a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1978, and was recognized as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property in 1980, but retired from the stage the following September.

能楽師。葛野(かどの)流大鼓(おおつづみ)方。本名利吉(りきち)。愛媛県松山に生まれる。初め同地で東新吾(しんご)に入門、1899年(明治32)上京し、津村又喜に師事。池内信嘉(のぶよし)が主宰した能楽会などで後進の指導にあたった。能楽界の硬骨漢として知られ、芸風も気迫に満ち、重厚峻厳(しゅんげん)、秋霜烈日(しゅうそうれつじつ)と評された。また囃子(はやし)の音楽理論の確立にも貢献。1950年(昭和25)宗家預りとなる。53年芸術院会員に任じられ、55年重要無形文化財保持者の認定を受けたが、翌年9月舞台を引退した。
