A poem written directly on a wall. In China, walls have been used as a place to transmit poetry from ancient times to modern times. An example of a poem on a wall is recorded in "Laocan Youji" by Liu E of the Qing Dynasty. The great Liang writer Shen Yue wrote his own "Eight Poems" on the wall of Xuan Chang Tower, built in Jinhua County, Zhejiang Province, and Xuan Chang Tower was subsequently also called the Eight Poems Tower. There are many poems by Tang Dynasty poets that are entitled "Inscribed on a Wall," but they are all "Inscribed Wall Poems." There is a well-known story in the "Sixth Patriarch's Platform Sutra" that tells of Huineng (the founder of Southern Zen Buddhism), a man of the early Tang Dynasty, who inscribed a poem on the wall that shows a state of enlightenment, including the phrase "originally nothing," and was recognized by the Fifth Patriarch Hongren, who eventually bestowed him the Sixth Patriarch's robes and hats.
