1867‐1952 A chemist born in Moscow. A pioneer in high-pressure contact chemistry. He initially received military training, but became interested in the chemistry he learned at the Artillery Academy. In 1896 he studied under J.F.A. W. Bayer at the University of Munich, and in 1899 he became a professor at his alma mater. He continued to hold important positions after the revolution, organizing the High Pressure Research Institute in Leningrad (1927). In 1930 he moved to the United States, where he gained citizenship, and served as professor at Northwestern University and head of research at Universal Oil Company. He is credited with discovering the synthesis of isoprene, which made him famous, as well as the high-pressure cylinder (Ipatiev cylinder), which he invented himself.
