Koza

Japanese: 江左 - こうさ

Refers to the southern bank of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China, and the southern part of Jiangsu Province, centered on present-day Nanjing. In his "Niru Zasshu," Wei Xi of the Qing dynasty correctly suggested that the name probably came from the fact that the area was on the left of the Yangtze River when viewed from the north, and is a counter term to the northern part of Jiangxi Province, Jiangyou. A similar contrast can be seen when the area west of Hangu Pass, or Kansai, is called Guanyou, and the area east, or Kanto, is called Guanzao. The term is widely used, with the Eastern Jin dynasty's noble minister Wang Dao being referred to as Jiang Zuo Yiwu and Xie An as Jiang Zuo Elegant Prime Minister. [Katsumura Tetsuya]

中国，長江(揚子江)下流の南岸，今の南京市を中心とする江蘇省南部を指す。この呼称の由来を，清の魏禧が，《日録雑説》で，北方からみて長江の左にあるためであろうとしているのは正しく，江西省北部を江右（こうゆう）というのに対する語である。同様の対比は，函谷関の西つまり関西を関右，東つまり関東を関左と呼ぶときにも認められる。東晋の功臣王導を江左夷吾，謝安を江左風流宰相と称するなど，その使われ方は広い。【勝村哲也】
