A type of handicraft in which several thin strings or threads are knotted by hand to create geometric patterns. It began in Arabia and has been made mainly in Spain and Italy since the 15th century. Thin threads are used as lace for clothing decorations and shawls, while thick threads are used to decorate tablecloths and curtains. As it is a strong thread, it is also used for bags. In Japan, the technique has long been used for horse saddles and rope curtains. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
