Boundary lubrication

Japanese: 境界潤滑 - きょうかいじゅんかつ（英語表記）boundary lubrication

A condition in which a lubricating film of sufficient thickness cannot be formed between the two surfaces of the frictional parts, and the frictional surfaces come into partial solid contact. This occurs when the load acting between the frictional surfaces increases or the sliding speed decreases. A thin film of lubricant that is physically and chemically adsorbed to the frictional surfaces maintains the lubricating effect, reducing friction and surface damage. In this case, unlike in the case of fluid lubrication, the viscosity of the lubricant is no longer a dominant factor. The friction coefficient is often a value between that of fluid lubrication and solid friction.

摩擦部分の2面間に十分な厚さの潤滑膜が形成できなくなり，摩擦面が部分的に固体接触するようになる状態。摩擦面間に作用する荷重が大きくなったり，すべり速度が小さくなると起る。摩擦面に物理的，化学的に吸着した潤滑剤の薄い膜が潤滑作用を保持するので，摩擦や表面損傷を軽減することができる。この場合，潤滑の粘度は流体潤滑の場合と異なり，もはや支配的要因ではなくなる。摩擦係数は流体潤滑と固体摩擦の中間の値となることが多い。
