From the European Union:

…Furthermore, the Maastricht Treaty aims to re-establish the Economic and Monetary Union, replacing the European Monetary System (EMS) that was established in 1979 with the aim of stabilizing exchange rates, and to establish a European Central Bank and introduce a single currency, the euro, in 1999. [EC/EU Law]
The norms governing the organization and functioning of the three pillars that make up the European Union are called EU law, and the part of that that relates to the EC is called EC law. The primary sources of law that form the basis of EU law are the Paris Treaty of the European Coal and Steel Community (effective since 1952), the Rome Treaty of the EEC and Euratom (effective since 1958), the Single European Act (effective since 1987), and the Maastricht Treaty (effective since 1993). The Treaty of Amsterdam, signed on October 2, 1997, will also join this group when it comes into force.
