A bird (illustration) of the Charadriiformes order, family Charadriidae. Total length is about 30 cm. It is the third largest plover after the Lapwing and the Lapwing. It breeds in the tundra of the Arctic Circle, and migrates to Africa, South Asia, Australia, South America, etc. in winter. It migrates to Japan as a migratory bird or winter bird and can be seen throughout the country. The plumage differs between summer and winter. In summer plumage, the face, throat, foreneck, chest, and belly are black, the upper side of the body has white and black spots, and there are white bands on the wings. The upper and lower tail covers are white, and the tail has a gray-brown band on a white background. In winter plumage, the black from the face to belly disappears, the bird is pale gray-brown overall, and there are thin, unclear vertical stripes of dark color on the face, back, and chest.

チドリ目チドリ科の鳥(イラスト)。全長約30cm。ケリやタゲリに次いで大型のチドリ。北極圏のツンドラ帯で繁殖し，冬はアフリカ，南アジア，オーストラリア，南アメリカなどに渡る。日本には旅鳥または冬鳥として渡来し全国で見られる。夏羽と冬羽では羽色が違い，夏羽では顔，のど，前頸（ぜんけい），胸，腹が黒く，体の上面は白色と黒色の斑で，翼には白帯がある。上尾筒と下尾筒は白く，尾は白色の地に灰褐色の帯がある。冬羽では顔から腹にかけての黒色がなくなり，全体に淡灰褐色で，顔や背や胸に暗色の不明りょうな細い縦斑がある。
