Born: 28 January 1572 in Dijon
[Died] December 13, 1641, Moulins. French religious leader and saint. After the death of her husband, she heard the sermons of Francois of Salles, and following his guidance, in 1610 she founded the Congregation of the Visitation of Mary together with him in Annecy. This congregation avoided strict penances and discipline, but it nurtured many nuns with religious zeal, and grew rapidly. After Francois' death, Chantal published his letters and sermons. During the plague epidemic in 1628, she opened her convent as a hospital. She was beatified in 1751 and canonized in 1667. Her feast day is August 21.
