...Most species are under 10cm long, but the largest frog in the world, the African Goliath Frog (Conraua goliath) (illustration), can reach a length of 30-40cm (the Guinness World Record, 1997 edition, shows that an individual caught in the Sanaga River in Cameroon in 1989 was 36.83cm long). The next largest, the African bullfrog (Pyxicephalus adspersus ) (illustration), lives underground. During the spawning season, males protect their eggs and larvae in swamps, and are said to pounce on any enemy that approaches, even if it is an elephant. Its jaws are so strong that if it bites your finger, its teeth will injure you.
