The Cathedral of Saint-Bénigne, built in 1002-12 by the Cluny monk Guillaume de Volpiano (962-1031), is a typical example of Burgundian Gothic architecture, although only the crypt remains. The chancel was completed in the 13th century and the nave in the 14th century. Dijon became a major center of artistic activity during the reign of four dukes of Burgundy from the House of Valois, from the late 14th century to the 15th century.
