Japanese: 寛永御前試合 - かんえいごぜんじあい

Storytelling. On the Boys' Festival in 1636, a time of military might, the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, had famous martial artists from all over the country appear in a match held in front of the emperor, who begins with a retelling of each individual's life and then recounts the details of the match. It is not based on historical fact, and the characters and combinations vary depending on the performer, who may include Araki Mataemon, Miyamoto Iori, or Yui Shosetsu, but it is popular for its famous and unusual matches, and has been frequently performed since the end of the Edo period. "Toyotomi Gozen Jigyo" is included in the Tachikawa Bunko collection, and "Kyoho Gozen Jigyo" is included in an Osaka storytelling book. [Yoshizawa Hideaki]
