Drill (English spelling) drill
Also called a drill. A cutting tool used to make holes in workpieces. It is usually attached to a drill press and rotated while being pressed to make holes. Various types are manufactured depending on the material, shape, and dimensions of the workpiece, but they can be broadly categorized as twist drills, flat drills, and special drills. Twist drills are the most common, and this type is what is simply referred to as a drill. This drill consists of a body and a shank, and the body has multiple twist flutes and a pair of cutting edges (tip). The twist flutes serve as a passage for discharging chips. Drill materials used are carbon tool steel, alloy tool steel, high-speed steel, and cemented carbide, but high-speed steel is widely used due to its cutting ability and lifespan.

きり (錐) ともいう。工作物に穴をあけるときに用いる切削用工具。通常はボール盤に取付け,回転させながら押込んで穴あけする。工作物の材質,形状,寸法などに応じて各種のものが製作されているが,大別すれば,ねじれぎり (ツイストドリル) ,平ぎり,特殊ぎりになる。ねじれぎりが最も一般的で,単にドリルといえばこの型をさす。このドリルは本体およびシャンク (柄) 部から成り,本体には複数のねじれ溝と,1対の切刃 (先端部) がある。ねじれ溝は切り屑の排出路の役目をする。ドリル材には,炭素工具鋼,合金工具鋼,高速度鋼,超硬合金が用いられるが,切削能力や寿命の点から高速度鋼が広く使用されている。

霊長目オナガザル科。体形,大きさともマンドリルに似るが,顔に色彩のない (顔は黒色で裸出し,顔のまわりの毛は白色) 点で容易に区別される。普通,家族単位の小群で行動し,雄のリーダーに率いられる。雄は大きな犬歯をもち,気が荒く,ときにはヒトに向うこともある。雑食性。アフリカ西部の森林地帯に生息する。
