Japanese: 借地農 - しゃくちのう（英語表記）tenant

Agricultural managers or farmers who occupy farmland based on a lease agreement are usually called "tenant farmers." In other words, this includes not only farmers but also agricultural capitalists (capitalist agricultural managers). The terms of the lease are determined in the lease agreement, but there are also oral agreements that do not require a document. The obligations of the tenant farmer include payment of rent (rent fee), proper land use, maintenance of the fertility of the land, maintenance and repair of buildings and other things, and providing convenience to the next tenant farmer when vacating the leased land. At the same time, the obligations of the landowner include, for example, compensation for the "remaining value" of the tenant farmer's land improvement investment (so-called tenant right) or compensation for "beneficial expenses," etc.

賃貸借契約にもとづいて農地を占有している農業経営者あるいは農民を通常〈借地農〉と呼ぶ。すなわち，農民だけでなく，農業資本家(資本家的農業経営者)もその中に入る。借地条件は借地契約をもって取り決められるが，文書によらない口頭契約もある。借地農の義務として地代(借地料)の支払い，適正な土地利用，土地の肥沃度の維持，建物その他の維持･修繕，借地明渡しの際における次期借地農への便宜提供等が規定され，同時に地主の義務として，たとえば借地農の土地改良投資の〈残された価値〉の補償(いわゆるテナント･ライト)ないし〈有益費〉補償その他が規定されることになる。
